Thursday, September 10 brings another major night of NYC art openings to Tribeca, as galleries across the neighborhood debut new exhibitions for the fall season. As Tribeca continues its rapid emergence as one of New York City’s leading destinations for contemporary art, this week’s gallery receptions offer another opportunity to explore the expanding downtown art scene. Most Tribeca art openings take place from 6 to 8 PM unless otherwise noted

Today’s featured artist is Ilana Savdie, whose new paintings are on view in Savdie / Soutine at NORR COHAN. The exhibition places Savdie’s work in dialogue with Chaïm Soutine, exploring a shared interest in distortion, saturated color, and the instability of the figure.
Savdie is known for pushing against the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, body and image, surface and depth. Her paintings depict bodies in states of transformation, where figures seem arranged, suspended, and continuously becoming something else. Through layered surfaces, translucencies, gradients, and gestural marks, Savdie creates images that resist fixed interpretation.
