After a packed week of NYC art openings, the fall art season continues into the weekend with exhibitions and events across Lower Manhattan. This weekend’s featured artist is Oscar yi Hou, whose third solo exhibition with James Fuentes, Nightcrawling, turns toward underground nightlife and its afterglows as charged spaces of intimacy, desire, and collective experience. Through figuration and portraiture, yi Hou creates atmospheric paintings where bodies, light, gesture, and environment dissolve into one another.
In this new body of work, the composed distance of portraiture gives way to something more embedded and unstable. Vaporous marks, drips, and washes of color create scenes that feel crowded, intimate, and alive, capturing nightlife as a space where identity and connection remain constantly in flux. Nightcrawling explores both the ecstasy and exhaustion of these moments, where pleasure may be temporary but remains transformative.
