Featured artist La Vaughn Belle presents a large-scale painting installation developed during her seven-week residency at Pace, transforming the gallery into an exploration of the horizon as a threshold between sky and ocean, life and death, known and unknown, arrival and departure. Based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Belle’s multidisciplinary practice engages with memory, history, fragments, silence, and the material legacies of colonialism.
Her exhibition is part of Pace University’s Mellon Foundation-funded Islands, Archipelagos, and Cultural Ecologies project, connecting the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, and New York City’s 42 islands. Works including Between The Storm and Horizon (where the water keeps its records) bring the histories and landscapes of the Virgin Islands into conversation with New York.
